There are ritualistic crimes well known for being used by serial killers, but among them there is satanic crime, an intriguing specific type that stirs people’s curiosity and needs a much more elaborate analysis to be identified and investigated. Satanic crimes are considered to be the violent actions usually influenced by satanism in a ritualistic way with the pretense of making a human sacrifice.
This type of crime is not common and can often be erroneously classified as such in cases of cruel crimes of murder with mutilation and cannibalism. In addition, there are occult religions and diverse different ideologies that may be related, involving or not crimes, but which are different from Satanism and will not be addressed here, such as vampirism, voodoo and Santeria.
To better understand how this crime occurs it is important to explain each step of this type of crime and what is needed to properly identify it. By disrupting its meaning beginning with Satanism, it is an ideological movement that uses the figure of Satan as a symbolic association of veneration that opposes everything that is Christian and possesses the vision of the pursuit of success without limitations.
The ritualistic form, however, requires a repetitive sequence before, during and after the crime associated with some sect, usually with satanic symbols. And finally, the human sacrifice occurs for several reasons, such as maintenance of youth and search for success.
And what would be the symbols of these rituals? They are those connected to the figure of Satan, such as the pentagram, candles, number 6, inverted cross, act on specific dates, the goat and vodoo doll. But the satanic ritual that leads to crime goes far beyond symbols. They are usually sacrificial rituals that have some specific characteristics.
In scenes of crimes of this type it is possible to see beyond the symbols, an altar where the sacrificed body is left with a pentagram around with four points with something on top, like candles to leave an open tip as symbol of the way for the passage of the soul of the person. There are also usually bones or animal carcasses, as it is part of the ritual to sacrifice an animal before human sacrifice.
On the body of the victims: It is important to analyze the location of the body and the way it is exposed; may appear with wounds and cuts, especially in the neck; parts of the body may be missing; the stomach contents may contain urine, feces, drugs, poison and / or wine; may contain dripping wax, incense ash and oils; as well as human or animal feces. All of these factors are relative to ritual and are important parts for the completion of sacrifice in the view of criminals.
Other important factors about the victims is that their blood can be withdrawn previously for use by criminals and therefore are generally children or young women who symbolize purity and youth.
Satanic Crimes and Criminal Profiling
For Criminal Profiling, to study the satanic crimes and to be able to identify them is fundamental to be able to identify the perpetrators of these crimes, since they are very specific in these cases. When this occurs, the profile of these criminals is usually as follows: commit the crime in a group, have members and leader and their behavior are different.
The leader is identified as a psychopath with delirium of greatness who convinces members to do all the ritual in exchange for benefits and indoctrination. They take advantage of their charisma and the vulnerability of others through an indoctrination to commit crimes of various kinds, including human sacrifice.
Already members have psychopathological changes, going through a period of crisis and are vulnerable and dependent people who are persuaded by the leader to commit crimes and perversities.
It is noteworthy that contemporary Satanists assert in their defense that their rituals do not involve sacrifices of any kind or criminal or perverse acts. By observing the behavioral patterns of criminals who use satanic rituals to kill people, one can actually perceive the manipulation of the mentally ill through the sect to achieve the perverse goals of their leaders.
Understanding the crime scene as a satanic crime, victimhood and locality are fundamental factors in the authors’ criminal profile and finding them. It is also important to understand that if a crime is misconceived as satanic or as non-satanic this completely changes the course of investigations bringing various difficulties to solve the case, so it is necessary to understand how these crimes work and be careful in their identification to know when to identify them or not.
Below is a brief summary of two cases, one considered to be a satanic crime, and another not worthy of being analyzed and studied to better understand how these crimes work.
Sumé Satanic Crime
A boy was found dead with body parts mutilated in Sumé, Borborema region, PB, in the year 2015. His blood had been withdrawn, his body open and near the place where his body was found there were bones of an animal that was not Of region. After a long investigation, the boy’s mother and stepfather confessed that they committed the crime with two more people in a paid ritual to remove the child’s blood and liver.
Non-Satanic Crime in the Valley of the Bells
Two children were found quartered in plastic bags and cardboard boxes in Vale dos Sinos, in Novo Hamburgo (RS), in 2017. Initially, police said a Gravataí temple was involved in the crime and that the perpetrators would have done a satanic ritual with the victims.
But it was later discovered that a witness had been coerced into asserting that the crime involved a satanic ritual and that the delegate responsible, who had been removed, had said that his conclusions came from divine insights, including who should be heard and what should be heard be done in investigations.
Criminal profiling plays an important role in identifying a satanic crime, since it is necessary to have a thorough analysis of the crime scene and knowledge of the area to understand what is involved and to better identify perpetrators of this crime, or even to rule out that a crime was committed in this style.
Even though it is a non-recurring crime, understanding these types of differentiated crimes lowers the chances of being caught off guard when mistrust occurs.
